CNN —Chita Rivera, an iconic performer of stage and screen with credits including “Chicago,” “Kiss of the Spider Woman” and “Sweet Charity,” has died. She was 91. Rivera’s longtime publicist Merle Frimark confirmed the news to CNN on Tuesday, saying Rivera died “peacefully” on Tuesday “in New York after a brief illness.”The recipient of a record 10 Tony Award nominations, and winner of two for “The Rink” and “The Kiss of the Spider Woman,” Rivera’s unparalleled Broadway career spanned decades, from playing Anita in “West Side Story” and opposite Dick Van Dyke in “Bye Bye Birdie” to signature Bob Fosse musicals like “Chicago” and “All That Jazz.”Although she maintained a dizzying stage schedule, Rivera appeared in a number of movies and TV shows as well, including a screen adaptation of “Sweet Charity” as well as “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.”The honors Rivera amassed included being a Kennedy Center honoree in 2002 and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, presented to her by President Obama in 2009. Frimark included a statement from Rivera’s daughter Lisa Mordente, which mentioned the star’s funeral will be private and that she is survived by her daughter along with siblings Julio, Armando and Lola del Rivero “along with her many nieces, nephews and friends.”This is a developing story and will be updated.

How Did These Strange Songs Hit No. 1?

When Melanie’s “Brand New Key” debuted in 1971, some people were confused. What did the singer, who died on Tuesday at 76, mean when she sang about having a brand-new pair of roller skates and someone else having a brand-new key? Melanie told interviewers that she wrote the song in 15 minutes, after ending a 27-day fast, and that it was intended to be cute. It sounded strange, like a song out of time — Melanie said she intended it to hearken to the 1930s — sung with what could now be called a warbling “indie girl voice.” And it somehow hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Marie Irvine was 99 years old when a chapter in her long-ago career became a TikTok sensation. During a crucial period late in Marilyn Monroe’s life, Ms. Irvine had been her makeup artist in New York City. When a TikTok star learned her story, it blew up the internet. In 1958, Life magazine commissioned Richard Avedon to reimagine Ms. Monroe as the screen and stage sirens Clara Bow, Marlene Dietrich, Theda Bara, Jean Harlow and Lillian Russell. It was Ms. Irvine who assisted with her makeup — turning her into Ms. Russell’s candy-box pinup, and Ms. Dietrich’s steamy Lola Lola from the film “The Blue Angel.”It ran in the Dec. 22 issue of the magazine, with a piece written by Ms. Monroe’s husband at the time, the playwright Arthur Miller, with the headline, “My Wife Marilyn.” He described the photos “as a kind of history of our mass fantasy, so far as seductresses are concerned.”And when Ms. Monroe, having been sewn into her skintight sequined gown, sang a breathless “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy at a Democratic fund-raiser at Madison Square Garden in May of 1962, it was Ms. Irvine who prepared her beforehand in Ms. Monroe’s apartment on East 57th Street, and then rushed to the Garden later with the star’s drop earrings, because she had left them behind.

That agency, the U.S. Parole Commission, ruled on Friday that he had already served a long-enough sentence. Lieutenant Alkonis “fell asleep” at the wheel, according to an accident report obtained by The New York Times. Lieutenant Alkonis pleaded guilty to negligent driving in an effort to receive a suspended sentence. At trial he said he had been suffering from “acute mountain sickness” just before the accident, but a judge disagreed.

Now, her children are fighting over who should inherit her money, pointing to conflicting wills that Ms. Williams left, including one she signed shortly before her death. It is the latest legal dispute spawned by Sue, a crown jewel of paleontology regarded as the most complete T. rex fossil ever found. Before her death in 2020, Ms. Williams had written two wills. In a 2017 will, she appointed one of her daughters, Sandra Williams Luther, as the personal representative of her estate. In another will, written in 2020, she designated that same daughter to be her sole heir and the sole executor of her estate.

The opening night of a revival of Richard Wagner’s “Tannhäuser” at the Metropolitan Opera in New York was interrupted Thursday night by climate protesters shouting “No Opera” from the balconies on both sides of the opera house. Protesters with the group Extinction Rebellion NYC unfurled banners that read “No Opera On A Dead Planet,” according to Peter Gelb, the general manager at the Met. Met officials were then forced to bring down the curtain at around 9:30 p.m., halfway through the second act. About eight minutes passed before security officials ushered out the protesters perched on the balconies, Mr. Gelb said. The crowd jeered the demonstrators and burst into applause when the curtains again opened, but the elation was short-lived.

“Let’s light it up!” the actress Jennifer Lawrence said on Monday night as she helped to reveal the holiday windows and kick off the annual lights show at Saks Fifth Avenue. As is tradition, onlookers crammed behind barricades near 50th Street as performers — in this case from the Martha Graham Dance Company — flooded Fifth Avenue. Behind them, nearly 300,000 lights illuminated what is described as a “wheel of fortune” installation, which covered 10 stories of the Saks Fifth Avenue New York flagship facade. Ms. Lawrence, a longtime Dior ambassador, gathered alongside other actresses, including Tracee Ellis Ross, Rachel Zegler, Ashley Park, Alexandra Daddario, Lola Tung and Maya Hawke. They packed onto bleachers across the street for the show, which included fireworks launched from the roof of the department store.

Starting next year, it should be less frustrating for iPhone and Android users to text one another. Green message bubbles signal that they are coming from an Android or other non-iPhone user. But they have come to be associated with an unpleasant texting experience for iPhone users, whose messages are blue to indicate that they have been sent via iMessage. The green bubble is here to stay, however: It will signal when RCS is in use. The technology “will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users,” Apple said in a statement.

In addition to the thoughts about squirrels and work, Kelce also posted in 2010 about how much he loved going to IHOP and ordering the steak and eggs for breakfast, to which one user responded: “such a good order king.”He hated long lines at Chipotle, got excited for basketball games and enjoyed a good fettuccine Alfredo at the local Olive Garden from time to time. One user wrote that his posts represented a simpler time on that platform: “travis kelce’s old tweets perfectly encapsulate what twitter once was,” they posted. “Dudes expressing themselves without fear of judgement during study hall.”Still, many fans found reasons to make fun of the football star. Many pointed out the spelling errors he made in the posts, while others compared Kelce’s unsophisticated posts to complex lyrics from the song “All Too Well” that Swift, a 12-time Grammy winner whose Eras Tour this year shattered concert records, released around the same time. “oh this himbo .. i love him,” one user replied to a post that included one such side-by-side.

An investigator with the Los Angeles County medical examiner’s office has been charged with stealing items, including a gold necklace, from two dead men, the authorities said. The investigator, Adrian Muñoz, who had worked for the department since 2018, was charged with one felony count of grand theft of property and one misdemeanor count of petty theft of property, the county district attorney’s office said on Wednesday. Mr. Muñoz, 34, would face a sentence of up to three years if he were convicted on all counts, George Gascón, the Los Angeles County district attorney, said at a news conference on Wednesday. “It’s a profound betrayal of the very essence of the role and the solemn duty owed to both the deceased and their bereaved families,” Mr. Gascón said in a statement on Wednesday.

The reactions to Wednesday’s trailer, which was posted across social media platforms, were mixed. !”There was some confusion about the lack of musical performances in the trailer, given that the film is being positioned as an adaptation of a musical. The woman was briefly furious, but her face softened once she saw the tether connecting the men by the waist. Francesco Magisano, the man who had run into her, is blind, and his guide Nev Schulman nervously apologized for the accident. The men were running together for the first time in preparation for the New York City Marathon on Sunday. Marathons are physically and emotionally challenging, but the New York City Marathon has a unique set of difficulties for blind runners and their guides. The sheer number of screaming spectators and runners — race officials are expecting approximately 50,000 finishers this year — make it difficult for guides to steer blind runners along the tightly packed 26.2-mile course.

Llergo said she knows she isn’t the first person to traverse genres — and she’s not just talking about the Catalan pop star Rosalía, whose debut album, “El Mal Querer,” is often credited with catapulting flamenco onto the global stage. (Incidentally, she and Llergo both studied at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya in Barcelona under the same mentor, José Miguel Vizcay.) “Flamenco has always lent itself to other styles. All you have to do to find proof of that is look back at people like Lola Flores and Camarón,” Llergo said, referring to Camarón de la Isla, the singer often credited as the 20th century’s “god” of flamenco. “I run through your body like water runs through a river,” she sings in the synth-heavy “Juramento,” in a nod to her predecessor.

Texas became the latest state to repeal tax on period products by passing a bill that went into effect September 1, 2023. So the idea of a tampon tax is kind of a misnomer,” said Loughead. Starting Wednesday, consumers paying state sales tax on menstrual products will be able to get those costs on some period care purchases reimbursed. The Tampon Tax Back Coalition — an initiative of period care brands August, Cora, LOLA, The Honey Pot, Rael, Here We Flo, Saalt and DIVA — will reimburse consumers for the tax paid on eligible items sold by the eight participating brands. The coalition aims to stop the "tampon tax," a term used to describe the state sales tax imposed on products such as tampons, pads and menstrual cups in more than a dozen U.S. states. Many states exempt essential products such as food and medications from being subject to sales tax but leave out period care products, because their current state tax codes consider them nonessential goods. The Tampon Tax Back Coalition was born out of an initiative by August that launched in May.
